Two years have passed since the partial opening of the Western Kyushu Shinkansen line, but the full opening date remains uncertain. This is because the gap between the national government, which insists that the line be built to the same "full standard" as the Tokaido Shinkansen and other lines, and Saga Prefecture, which opposes the extension from Saga Prefecture to Hakata (Fukuoka City), has not been bridged.
