About "Biodiversity Impact Analysis
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is a concept that refers to the "diversity" and "interconnectedness" of all life on Earth, and consists of three layers of diversity: ecosystems, species, and genes. All life, including us humans, is supported by the natural environment of this diversity and enjoys various benefits, or "ecosystem services," such as food supply and climate control.
These "ecosystem services" supported by the natural environment fall into four broad categories
Supply Service | Supply of resources for direct human use, including food, water, timber, fuel, and genetic resources |
Coordination Services | Maintaining and regulating the environment through natural processes such as climate stabilization, water purification, flood and drought mitigation, pest control, and pollination |
Cultural Services | Recreation, tourism, education, art, spiritual fulfillment, and other cultural blessings enjoyed by humans |
Infrastructure Services | Underlying natural processes that support all other ecosystem services, such as soil formation, nutrient cycling, and photosynthesis |
However, this biodiversity base is rapidly being lost due to climate change and development pressures. Conservation of biodiversity is essential to realize a sustainable society. The new biodiversity analysis section added by aiESG integrates analytical techniques from supply chain analysis and satellite image analysis to quantitatively assess biodiversity impacts at Scope 3 (greenhouse gas emissions of other companies related to business activities).
aiESG Consulting" can assess impacts on biodiversity in the following impact areas
- GHG emissions
- Water Consumption
- Land use (occupancy and alteration)
- Water pollution (eutrophication)
- Soil acidification

Background of the addition of "Biodiversity Impact Analysis" to the analysis items
With the release of the final recommendations of the TNFD (Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) in September 2023, many companies have begun to disclose TNFD information in the same manner as the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures). TNFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) in September 2023, many companies are now beginning to disclose TNFD information as well as TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures).
Biodiversity Impact Analysis can be used as a starting point for a company's TNFD efforts to understand the risks and visualize the degree of impact in the initial stages for the purpose of inventorying the company's natural capital dependence and impact. It can also be useful as supporting data in disclosures to investors and financial institutions.
